Overview

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a self-governing organization established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, created under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

A 14-digit FSSAI registration number is required on food packages or premises and must be obtained by traders, manufacturers and food-store owners. The number contains producer-permit details and manufacturing-state information.

Under FSS (Licensing and Registration) Regulations, 2011, FBOs fall into a 3-tier system based on annual turnover:

  • Basic Registration: annual turnover up to ₹12 lakhs. Government fee around ₹100 per year.
  • State License: turnover between ₹12 lakhs and ₹20 crore. Government fee ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 per year depending on the activity.
  • Central License: turnover above ₹20 crore, or operations across multiple states, importers, exporters, e-commerce food sellers, and so on. Government fee around ₹7,500 per year.
